Mainova AG
Interactive AR
Exhibition App
The Challenge
Mainova AG, one of Germany's regional energy providers, commissioned an interactive tablet application with augmented reality elements for use at a public exhibition — bringing their energy concept to life in a way that was informative, spatially engaging, and accessible to a broad audience.
The application needed to work in a fixed exhibition context: visitors would encounter the tablets at specific stations throughout the space, and the AR content had to respond precisely to physical markers placed at those locations — overlaying data, visualizations, and information about Mainova's energy concept directly onto the exhibition environment.
Hardware Design
A dedicated tablet housing was designed and modelled in 3D specifically for this project. The enclosure was subsequently manufactured in multiple units using CNC machining and laser cutting for use throughout the exhibition.
The key requirement for the housing was fixed positioning: the tablet had to remain securely mounted at a defined location so that the AR marker tracking would function reliably and visitors would always find the device exactly where they expected it. The resulting frame combined precise technical functionality with a clean, exhibition-appropriate appearance.
The Application
At various stations within the exhibition, physical AR markers triggered contextual overlays through the tablet app — displaying information, data, and visualizations relating to Mainova's energy concept at the exact points in the room where they were most relevant.
The data provided by Mainova was processed and restructured into a didactically coherent presentation — not simply displayed as raw figures, but visualized and sequenced in a way that built understanding progressively and made the content immediately legible for visitors without a technical background.
The result was an experience where the physical exhibition and the digital layer worked together: visitors could explore the space naturally, and the AR content enhanced what they saw in front of them at each station with precise, location-specific information.
The Result
A complete AR exhibition system — from the custom-fabricated tablet housing through to the interactive app — that translated complex energy data into an accessible, spatially embedded visitor experience. The installation ran across multiple units simultaneously throughout the exhibition space, giving visitors an independent, self-guided way to engage with Mainova's energy concept in depth.
